Tori Geller Staff writer The swim team just hired two new coaches after the head coach suddenly quit the day of the season starting. No one really knows right now why former coach Matthew Butler quit, but swimmers are respecting his choice and moving on with the season. “I think Matthew quitting at the beginning of the season was a poor choice, but I also think the new coaches know what they’re doing,” said Britt Shunn-Mitchell, one of the captains this year. The two new coaches will be Emily Monroe-Jones and Meghan O’Very. Monroe-Jones has a lot of coaching experience with triathletes, and she also swam for the University of Utah. O’very holds the 4A state record for the 100 breaststroke and swam for Brigham Young University. “We have a lot of potential to work with. It’s going to be a fantastic year,” said O’Very about the start of the season.
“I’m excited to work hard and have fun!” Monroe-Jones added about the season. Both coaches have great qualities they can bring to the table this year. Monroe-Jones is a tough coach who knows basically everything about swimming while Meghan is a little more laid back and fun. They both are firm believers in hard work and hope that will pay off over the season. They’re excited to get the season started and to hopefully improve a lot from last year. The team is expecting to have a lot of fast swims and hopefully some more state qualifiers! It’s better, although it still feels like you could add a lot more details about the coaches: their backgrounds and philosophies.
