Jada van Soolen Staff Writer Nalani Matthias, also known as, Ariana Kamaluonalani Emiko Matthias, is a smiling girl of Hawaiian descent with a mind full of music who can be seen throughout the halls of Logan High. Some may know her as just another student, others may know her as a member of the talented Crimson Colony Choir. Being a junior in high school and having the talent that she has, she’s destined for more than just the stage in the new auditorium. "My mom says I've been singing ever since I was born." Matthias was born on May 31 in New Jersey. She was born and raised in New Jersey and has been living in Logan for only 8 years. She misses New Jersey all the time but loves it here in Logan. Matthias has made a lot of friends while living here, including the choir teacher, Randy Smith.
“She’s a really talented young lady,” Smith said. He sees big things in her and knows that she can achieve greatness in whatever she wishes to do in her future. On January 19, Logan High had a diversity assembly, showing off different cultures, from our Native American to the Pacific Islands and around the world to others such as Spain and India. To show off her culture, Matthias chose to do the beginning dance from the movie Lilo and Stitch. She chose that dance because she wanted the audience to be familiar with where her family’s from. She says her “mom made sure her family grew up in that kind of culture” as they were growing up. “My favorite part would be the dancing,” she said. “I love telling stories through the dance.” But Matthias does not only dance. She plays piano and the ukulele and has the voice of an angel. She’s been taking voice lessons for two years now and has already done some impressive things. She sings solos in Crimson Colony, plays the piano or sings at all kinds of events, and sings with the Logan Tabernacle Choir. “My mom says that I’ve been singing ever since I was born,” she said. Matthias also figure skates, does archery, and used to be on a competitive volleyball team, but music is the main part of her life. She dreams to be a Broadway performer when she grows up, but hopes to be a music teacher if that dream doesn’t come true. Even if she doesn’t get to be in on that big stage in New York, she will still share her gift with everyone she meets, letting them know how happy she is to be the way she is and help others achieve their dreams.
